Naadu is a 2023 Indian Tamil language activity show movie composed and coordinated by M. Saravanan. Delivered by Narayanan Sri Curve Media and Amusement, the film stars Tharshan and Mahima Nambiar in the primary jobs. The music was comprise by C. Sathya with cinemato graphy by K. A. Sakthivel. The film was delivered In the theater on 1 December 2023.

Plot

An urban educated doctor who is transferred to a village in the hopes of mitigating the frequent illness and illness and disease spread in the rural area and her efforts to get adjusted to the ways of villagers in Naadu.

Release and reception

The film had a theatrical release on 1 December 2023 across Tamil Nadu. A reviewer from Times Now noted that the film told a “heartwarming tale” and that “is sure to make you question both your service to your nation and your sense of humanity”. A critic from Cinema Express wrote “the melodrama in Naadu is insufferably overstated and all for a story that is flat and pretty straightforward” and that “Naadu might have its heart in the right place but the heart pumps gallons of tears instead of blood”.

Production

Prior to the start of production, the team engaged in a 35-day acting workshop. The film was shot throughout 2022, and Saravanan balanced post-production work on Raangi (2022), with making Naadu. It became the first film to be shot at the Kolli Hills mountain range.

Naadu Movie Review:

Naadu begins with an aerial shot of a group of villagers living in the mountains looking all grim. As the camera zooms in, we do not discover the reason behind this, but follow a girl who gets up and walks away from this group. An older man follows her and soon, we discover the girl has died by suicide. It’s only much later that we get the answer to why there was sadness in the place even before the girl’s unfortunate death! An aspiring doctor, the girl, who had scored the highest marks in the district, could not clear a medical entrance test (the film never mentions NEET by name), extinguishing the village’s hope.

This is a place that has a hospital building, but any doctor who gets posted here opts for a transfer within a few days because of its remoteness. And this has led to many deaths that could have been avoided. This is why the villagers decide to make one of their own a doctor, but when she fails the ‘test’, we understand it is as much as another death for them.

And this is why we buy into the film’s simple premise — can they get the new doctor who comes to their village to stay?

Mahima Nambiar plays Shobana, the newly appointed doctor, and for this modern young woman, the place could be as alien as another planet. The villagers, who the film portrays as a bunch of innocent individuals, decide that they will do everything they can to impress her and make her fall in love with the place, resulting in scenes that bring a smile to our face.

And for Maari (Tharshan, who gets the body language right, but needs improvement with dialogue delivery), the friendly handyman, this is a mission. He is the brother of the girl who dies at the start of the film. There’s a subplot involving his father (the late RS Shivaji, in one of his last roles), who dies of cancer, but whose death has to be hidden from Shobana because she’s promised the old man that she’d never leave the village as long as he’s alive, but it is not taken much further.

Like its characters, Naadu is a naive film — simplistic in its writing and melodramatic in its telling. There are times when it does make us feel that a nuanced approach might have elevated it into a better film that leaves us with a punch in our guts with its bittersweet ending, but for all its flaws, it wears its heart on its sleeve, and that is kind of heartwarming.
